The oldest settlement in Bari: Ceglie

Description

Ceglie del Campo is the primary nucleus of the city of Bari, testified by the exceptional quantity of archaeological finds found in excavations – lawful and clandestine – that since 1600 have been undertaken in the area.

In our tour we will visit one of the necropolis with testimonies of sarcophagus and pit tombs dated to the V-IV century BC, and remains of a pavement in earthenware of a Roman domus present in the same necropolis. We will visit the exterior of the medieval Abbey of San Michele and from here the historic center with a visit to the Church where the icon of the Madonna del Campo is preserved. Morover, we will go to the Castle, a marquis baronial palace, which preserves in its underground traces in opus reticulatum, Roman construction technique dated to 50 BC and 50 AD on which archaeologists speculate various uses, from Roman castrum to domus or linked to the presence of more environments, even market area. Also in the castle there is the Small Museum Kailìa, in which are exhibited copies of ceramics that are now scattered in many Italian and foreign museums.
